A bank account in Bali: it all comes down to status

Opening an Indonesian bank account is a question not of which bank but of your status. KITAS and KITAP holders open accounts as an ordinary procedure; on a visit visa a standard resident account is generally unavailable. The core pack is a passport, a KITAS, proof of address and, depending on the bank, a tax number. Requirements vary between banks and branches.

Why it all comes down to status

The main question when opening an account is not which bank but what status you arrive with. The bank needs to understand on what basis you are in the country and for how long.

  • ✓With a residence status — a KITAS or KITAP — the account is an ordinary banking procedure
  • ✓On a visit visa — an e-VOA, C1, C2 or multiple-entry — a standard resident account is generally not available

Which is why 'a local bank account' appears in the benefits of almost every residence status: the E33G, Second Home, the retirement and family permits. The account is not a separate service but a consequence of status.

What the pack usually contains

The set varies between banks, but the core repeats:

  • ✓Your passport
  • ✓A valid KITAS or KITAP
  • ✓An NPWP tax number, or a declaration that you have none — depending on the bank and account type
  • ✓Proof of your address
  • ✓Sometimes a letter from your sponsor or employer
Honesty matters here. Requirements differ not only between banks but between branches of the same bank, and they change more often than they are published. Any list in an article — including this one — should be checked with the specific branch before you go, not relied on as final.
Address registration — SKTT and STM — is done in the first 14 days after your KITAS is issued, and without it this step can stall.

What the account gives you beyond transfers

  • ✓Paying rent and utilities without cash or intermediaries
  • ✓A local card accepted where foreign ones do not always work
  • ✓The ability to evidence funds for visa and status procedures
  • ✓For company owners — a separate corporate account for the PT PMA

A corporate account is a different matter with a different pack: it is opened for the company after registration and the core documents, not for an individual.

If you do not have status yet

While you are on a visit visa, the sensible move is not to look for workarounds but to settle the status — the account follows.

  • !'Open it in a local's name' schemes repeat the logic of nominee business ownership, with the same risks
  • !An account that is not in your name is not yours — legally or practically

If a residence status is in your plans, see which one fits: four questions in the visa finder give you a starting point.

How to prepare for the visit

A branch counter is not the place to discover the requirements. A few steps that save you a second trip:

  • ✓Call or message the specific branch and confirm the list for your status type
  • ✓Bring originals and copies — copies are asked for almost every time
  • ✓Check that the address on your documents matches where you actually live
  • ✓Confirm in advance whether an NPWP is needed for your particular account type

On the statuses that unlock an account, see our E33G KITAS and Second Home guides.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open an account on a tourist visa?

Generally no. Standard resident accounts are opened for KITAS or KITAP holders: the bank needs a basis for your presence in the country.

What documents are needed?

The core is a passport, a valid KITAS or KITAP, proof of address, and depending on the bank an NPWP tax number or a declaration that you have none. The exact list differs between banks and even branches.

Why does everyone quote different requirements?

Banks set internal rules themselves and change them more often than they publish them. Any list from an article is a guide, not a guarantee.

Do I need an NPWP?

It depends on the bank and account type: some require it, others accept a declaration that you have none. Worth confirming before you visit the branch.

What about a corporate account?

It is opened for the company after PT PMA registration and the core documents. A separate procedure, unrelated to a personal account.
