KITAS & KITAP
A KITAS (ITAS) is Indonesia’s temporary residence permit: proper resident status with a bank account, a driving licence and life without visa runs. A KITAP is the next rung — permanent residence, reached through years of continuous KITAS.
There are several KITAS types, and choosing the right first status shapes the whole journey — all the way to permanence. All eight options are below; if you’re unsure which is yours, a short consultation saves months.
Key terms
- A KITAS is temporary residence; the basis depends on type: employer, company stake, family, age, income or capital
- All KITAS grant resident rights: banking, rentals, a licence; work rights belong only to the work, investor and artist types within their basis
- Renewals happen in-country, no exits required
- A KITAP is permanent: a 5-year card with automatic renewal
- The fastest KITAP route is the family line; others take several years of continuous status

Frequently asked questions
How is a KITAS different from a KITAP?
A KITAS is temporary, with its own term and renewals. A KITAP is permanent: a 5-year card renewing automatically, ending the annual routine. You convert to a KITAP after years of continuous KITAS.
Which KITAS should I start with?
It depends on your basis: employed by a foreign company — E33G; building a business — D12 then investor; joining a spouse — family; 55+ — retirement. Tell us a little about yourself and we’ll orient you in one conversation.
Do KITAS grant the right to work?
Only the purpose-built ones: work (with the sponsoring company), investor (in your own company) and artist (within the contract). The rest are residence without Indonesian work rights.
Can I switch from one KITAS to another?
Yes — statuses convert when your basis changes, e.g. from remote worker to investor after founding a company. We’ll carry you through without gaps.
