Closing a KITAS with an EPO
Updated: 28 August 2026 · Verified by the Malina Visa team
EPO (Exit Permit Only) is the procedure for closing a KITAS while you are still in Indonesia. Immigration annuls the status and gives you a window to fly out.
Our all-in price is IDR 1,500,000. If you have already left and the KITAS is still open, you need the other procedure — ERP.
How it works
| Procedure | Where you are | What happens | All-in price |
|---|---|---|---|
| EPO | in Indonesia | the KITAS is annulled, seven days to fly out | IDR 1,500,000 |
| ERP | outside the country | the KITAS is closed remotely | IDR 1,500,000 |
The only difference is where you physically are when filing. The price is the same.
What to know before filing
- Seven days to fly out after it is issued — after that, overstay starts
- The passport is submitted physically — you cannot travel while the procedure runs
- The KITAS is annulled immediately — you cannot return on it; entry requires a new visa
- It works on an expired KITAS too — an expired status still has to be closed, it does not lapse on its own
When closing a KITAS is mandatory
There are more situations than "leaving for good". Closing is required whenever the old status has to make way for a new one.
- Leaving Indonesia permanently — even with six months still left on the KITAS
- Changing KITAS type — say from an E33G to an investor KITAS once the company exists. The new status will not be issued while the old one sits in the system
- Changing employer — a work KITAS is not transferable between companies
- Closing the sponsoring company — liquidating the PT and closing the linked KITAS go together
Why a KITAS cannot simply be abandoned
The logic of "the term will run out and the status will fall away" does not hold. A stay permit lives in the immigration database independently of where you are, and a person has to close it, not the calendar.
- An unclosed KITAS stays active in the system even if you left a year ago
- While it is active, no new visa can be issued — including the eVOA many people count on as a fallback
- The sponsor remains formally tied to your status, and the questions reach them as well
What to sort out before closing
A KITAS drags a tail of linked things behind it, and they are easier to close while the status is still valid: a bank account, rental agreements, a driving licence, residence registration. Tell us what is open and we will put the steps in order.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an EPO cost?
IDR 1,500,000 all-in. An ERP — the procedure for people who have already left the country — costs the same.
How long do I have to leave after an EPO?
Seven days. You must fly within that window; after it, overstay begins at IDR 1,000,000 per day.
Will my passport be held?
Yes, the passport is physically submitted to immigration for the duration. While it is there you cannot fly — which is why the ticket is bought after the procedure, not before.
Do I need to close a KITAS that has already expired?
Yes. This is the most common misconception: an expired status still sits in the immigration database and blocks a new visa. An EPO works on an expired KITAS too.
Can I come back to Indonesia after an EPO?
Not on the closed KITAS — it is annulled. Entering again requires a new visa: an eVOA, a C1 tourist visa or a new KITAS.
What if I just fly out and leave the status open?
The KITAS stays active in the system. When you decide to return and apply for a new visa — including an ordinary eVOA — it turns out the old status was never closed. Unpicking that after the fact costs more time and money.
