SKCK in Indonesia: the police certificate

An SKCK is issued only to KITAS and KITAP holders — a visit visa gives no grounds. Filing is in person and only in Jakarta, as the police app is closed to foreigners. The government fee is IDR 60,000, and the six-month validity is the reason most people end up doing it twice.

Who can get an SKCK at all

The limit people trip over most often: the certificate is issued only to holders of a KITAS or KITAP. Residency is a hard requirement, not a preference.

  • !A tourist visa, e-VOA or business visa gives no grounds — the application will not be accepted
  • !The C6 social visa does not qualify either: it grants no residency
  • !The certificate covers the absence of a criminal record in Indonesia, not in your home country
If you arrived on a visit visa and need a police certificate for local matters, you first need residency — for example through converting to a KITAS.

What it is for

An SKCK is rarely requested on its own — it usually surfaces on the way to something bigger.

  • Moving to a KITAP — permanent residency is not granted without it
  • Citizenship applications — a mandatory part of the file
  • Employment — some employers ask for it at hiring
  • Visas for other countries — some consulates want a certificate from your country of residence, not citizenship
  • Marriage to an Indonesian citizen — part of the document set

Documents

The list is short, but every item is formal: the wrong photo background is enough to be turned away.

  • A 4×6 cm photo on a yellow background, formal clothing — the yellow background is compulsory
  • A full copy of your passport, including every entry and exit stamp
  • A copy of your KITAS or KITAP
  • A fingerprint form, completed at the police station
  • A sponsor letter from your guarantor or employer in Indonesia
Passport stamps are checked closely: if pages are missing or the passport was replaced, bring the old one too.

How the procedure runs

Here is the key difference from what Indonesians do: the POLRI SuperApp is not available to foreigners. Filing is in person and on paper.

Recommendation from local police

You start at the POLDA or city police covering your address, which issues a letter of recommendation.

Fingerprints

Taken at the same place. It takes a few minutes.

Filing at Mabes Polri

For foreigners the SKCK is issued only by national police headquarters in Jakarta. A Bali office cannot close the case — the file goes to the capital.

Payment

The government fee is IDR 60,000 under regulation PP No. 60 of 2019. The fee is nominal; the real cost is travel and time.

Collection

The finished certificate is collected in person or by proxy.

Validity, and the mistake it causes

An SKCK is valid for six months from issue. That is shorter than it feels, and it produces the most common problem: people get the certificate early «to have it ready», and by the time the KITAP or citizenship file is submitted it has expired.

  • Order the certificate once the rest of the file is nearly complete, not first
  • If the process drags, budget for getting it a second time
  • For foreign consulates check their freshness rule — it is often three months, not six

Frequently asked questions

Can I get an SKCK on a tourist visa?

No. The certificate is issued only to KITAS or KITAP holders. Visit visas — e-VOA, C1, C2, the C6 social visa — give no grounds: an SKCK attests to a resident's clean record.

Where exactly do foreigners file?

At national police headquarters, Mabes Polri in Jakarta. You first obtain a recommendation letter from the POLDA or city police covering your address. The POLRI SuperApp is not available to foreigners.

What does an SKCK cost?

The government fee is IDR 60,000 under PP No. 60 of 2019. The real expense is not the fee but the trip to Jakarta and the time spent collecting recommendations.

How long is it valid?

Six months from the date of issue. If your KITAP or citizenship file takes longer to assemble, the certificate has to be obtained again.

Does an SKCK cover my home country record?

No. It concerns your stay in Indonesia only. If a consulate or authority asks for a certificate from your country of citizenship, that is obtained and legalised separately — see our apostille guide for how that works.
