Schengen from Bali: the Bulgaria route
An Indonesian resident files for Schengen where they live, not where they hold citizenship — no trip home needed. What happened with Bulgaria, and why it matters
Before 2025 a Bulgarian visa was national: it admitted you to Bulgaria but not to the Schengen area. That is now history.
Checks were lifted at Bulgarian and Romanian air and sea borders.
Land border checks went too. Both countries became full members of the Schengen area.
A Bulgarian type C visa now works on the same terms as a French or Italian one: the whole zone is open with it.
That is the whole point of the route: you file where the application will actually be accepted and assessed, and you receive a document valid across Schengen.
What changed on 7 November 2025
On that date the European Commission adopted a decision recommending that EU states stop issuing multiple-entry Schengen visas to Russian citizens.

Schengen applications in Indonesia largely run through VFS Global visa centres — there are three, and Jakarta handles most embassies and the largest volume. Confirm the current filing route for Bulgaria before booking: it changes, and it determines where you give biometrics.
Documents to prepare
The base pack is standard Schengen, but two items are critical for an Indonesian resident.
- ✓KITAS or KITAP — proof of legal residence. Without it, filing where you live does not work
- ✓Passport — valid at least 3 months beyond your return, with two blank pages
- ✓Flight and accommodation bookings for the whole trip
- ✓Medical insurance covering EUR 30,000 across the Schengen area
- ✓Proof of funds — bank statements for recent months
- ✓Proof of income or employment — a contract, an employer letter or your own company documents
An SKTT is sometimes requested as proof of address and an SKCK as a police certificate from your country of residence — check the requirements at the time you file.
The main destination rule — where people come unstuck
A Schengen visa is issued by the consulate of the country that is your main destination: where you will spend the most days, or, if equal, where you enter first.
- !Getting a Bulgarian visa and flying straight to Paris for two weeks breaks the rule rather than gaming it. Such itineraries are visible in your tickets and bookings
- !At your next application the travel history is reviewed: a mismatch between what you declared and what you did is a direct route to refusal
The practical conclusion: if you travel on a Bulgarian visa, Bulgaria has to be a genuine destination rather than a formality. It is inconvenient, but that is what keeps the route working.
Timing and money
The Schengen consular fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12. Visa centres charge their own service fee on top.

- ✓Summer and holidays lengthen the queue for an appointment, not just for processing
- ✓Add the Bali–Jakarta flight and at least one night: reception closes at 13:00
