Most Indonesian visas are filed not by the foreigner but through a penjamin — a sponsor, an Indonesian person or company that guarantees you before immigration. Sponsorship is governed by its own ministerial regulation on immigration guarantors.

✓Family KITAS — a spouse or parent who is an Indonesian citizen or holds a valid status
✓C6 — a sponsor with their own portal account, plus a letter from the host organisation

Why choosing a sponsor matters

A sponsor is not a one-off intermediary but the party every future extension depends on. If they stop responding, close down or simply drag their feet, your visa cannot be extended.

✓Do they hold their own immigration portal account? Filing goes through it, and an intermediary in the chain is one more point of failure
✓How are deadlines tracked? Extensions are filed no later than the day the permit expires, and the reminder should come from them, not from you
✓What happens if plans change? Ask in advance how a release from the guarantee is handled

Do I need a sponsor for an e-VOA?

No, the electronic visa on arrival needs no sponsor. Sponsors are required for the C1, C2 and C6, the D1/D2 and D12 multiple-entry visas, and every type of KITAS.

Can an Indonesian friend be my sponsor?

For visit visas a company usually acts as sponsor. A private individual is possible in some scenarios, but the responsibility is identical — including answering to immigration for your breaches.

What happens if my sponsor disappears?

You cannot extend without them: the extension application is filed by the sponsor. A vanished sponsor turns quickly into an overstay.

Can I change sponsor?

Yes. You need a statement from you declining the previous guarantee, a release letter from the old sponsor, and a guarantee letter from the new one.

Is the sponsor liable for my breaches?

Yes, a guarantor answers to immigration for your compliance with the terms of your stay. An overstay or unauthorised work concerns both sides.
