Every KITAS type: codes, terms and who they suit
KITAS is not one document but a family of limited-stay permits, each with its own index starting with the letter E. The index decides what you may do in the country, how long the permit runs, and whether it leads to permanent status. In May 2025 the classification was rewritten: 110 indices instead of 133, with two dozen work codes folded into one. Here is the current map.

What changed in 2025
The current list of indices comes from immigration ministerial decree M.IP-08.GR.01.01 of 2025, with an annex dated 2 May 2025. It repealed the previous classification of 23 October 2023. Durations and extension rules stayed where they were, in Permenkumham 22/2023.
- ✓The total number of indices fell from 133 to 110
- ✓Work indices went from 31 to 6: two dozen codes from E23B to E23W were merged into a single E23
- ✓New codes appeared for a parent-company representative at an Indonesian branch and for investors in the new capital, Nusantara
Work and business
| Index | Who it is for | Validity | Leads to KITAP |
|---|---|---|---|
| E23 | Employment with an Indonesian employer | 180 days, 1 or 2 years | Yes, after 3 years |
| E23Y | Work in the digital field | 180 days, 1 or 2 years | Yes |
| E23V | Staff at a foreign chamber of commerce | 1 or 2 years | Yes |
| E25 | Commissioner or board member | Set case by case | Yes |
| E26 | Work on vessels and platforms in Indonesian waters | 180 days or 1 year | No |
| E27 | Religious worker | 1 year | Yes, after 3 years |
An important caveat on the work KITAS: the route to permanent status is not open to every employee, but to the company's top leadership or the head of a foreign representative office. Hiring and employer permits are covered in our work KITAS guide and the article on RPTKA and DKP-TKA.
Investment
| Index | Who it is for | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| E28A | Investor holding shares in an Indonesian company | up to 2 years |
| E28B | Investor establishing a company in Indonesia | 5 or 10 years |
| E28C | Government bonds, listed shares or funds — the Golden Visa route | 5 or 10 years |
| E28D | Director or commissioner of a foreign company's branch | 5 or 10 years |
| E28F | Establishing a branch in the new capital, Nusantara | To be confirmed |
| E28G | Parent-company representative at a branch | To be confirmed |
The most common question is the investment threshold. We covered it separately in our article on the investor KITAS threshold: a personal shareholding and the company's capital are different requirements, and they are constantly conflated. What an investor may actually do on that status is in this article.
Family
The E31 group is the most branched, with close to a dozen variants depending on whom you are joining.
| Index | Who it is for | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| E31A | Spouse of an Indonesian citizen | 1 or 2 years |
| E31B | Spouse of a KITAS or KITAP holder | 1, 2, 5 or 10 years, not beyond the sponsor's permit |
| E31C, E31D | Child of a marriage between a foreigner and an Indonesian | 1 or 2 years |
| E31E | Your own child under 18 joining a KITAS or KITAP holder | up to 10 years, capped at age 18 and the parent's permit |
| E31G | Parents joining an adult Indonesian child | 1 or 2 years |
| E31H | Foreigner joining their own child who holds a KITAS or KITAP | 1, 2, 5 or 10 years |
Living without working: second home, retirement, remote work
This is the E33 group, and it is where most confusion lives. One correction first: E32 is not second home. It is repatriation — for former Indonesian citizens and their descendants. Second home sits in E33.
| Index | Who it is for | Validity | Leads to KITAP |
|---|---|---|---|
| E33 | Second home | 5 years | Yes, after 3 years |
| E33A, E33B | Invited experts, cooperation with government | 5 or 10 years | Yes |
| E33C, E33D | World figures and their companies | 5 or 10 years | Yes |
| E33E | Older applicants staying without a sponsor | 5 years | Yes, after 3 years |
| E33F | Older applicants | 1 year | Yes, after 3 years |
| E33G | Remote work for a company based outside Indonesia | 1 year | No |
| E34 | Medical treatment | 1 year | No |
| E35A | Work and holiday under the agreement with Australia | 1 year | No |
Note E33G in particular: it gives remote workers a year of lawful residence but leads nowhere permanent — the index simply is not on the list of those that convert. Conditions are set out in our E33G article, and a comparison of long-stay options is here.
Study and research
| Index | Who it is for | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| E30A | Primary and secondary education | 1 or 2 years |
| E30B | Higher education, including master's and doctorate | 1 or 2 years |
| E30F | Student exchange | 1 or 2 years |
| E29 | Scientific research | 1 year |
Study indices do not lead to permanent status. For children travelling with parents, see children's visas.
How long you can live on a KITAS in total
Extensions are not endless, and the ceiling depends on how long the first permit was.
- ✓First permit under 5 years — each extension is no longer than the first, and the total across all KITAS is capped at 6 years
- ✓First permit of 5 years or more — the total is capped at 10 years
- ✓A 180-day work KITAS extends in 180-day steps, up to 3 years in total
You may apply for an extension no earlier than 30 days before expiry for permits up to a year, or three months before for longer ones. The deadline is the expiry date itself. Extensions of two years or more are approved not by the local office but by the immigration directorate, which is worth building into your timeline.
Converting to KITAP
KITAP is a permanent permit valid for five years, with one important feature: it can be extended indefinitely. That is the real fork in the road when choosing an index.
| Coming from | Waiting period |
|---|---|
| Work, religious activity, investment, second home | 3 continuous years in Indonesia from the date the KITAS was granted |
| Family and repatriation | Immediately, no wait |
| Spouse of an Indonesian citizen | The marriage must have lasted at least 2 years |
A few more conditions worth knowing in advance: apply no earlier than 30 days before the KITAS expires; an integration statement is required, except for children under 18; and investors face a separate shareholding threshold of at least IDR 15,000,000,000. If commitments attached to the original KITAS went unmet, the conversion is refused.
Permanent status is covered in detail in our KITAP article, and a comparison of KITAS, KITAP, the Golden Visa and second home is here.
What the regulations do not say
A word about the limits of this article. The classification decree lists indices and activities, but it does not name the money: the second-home deposit, the income requirement for remote work, the savings thresholds for the retirement indices. It defers all of them to other legislation. That is why you will not find those figures in the tables above — we do not supply numbers the primary source does not contain.
For current requirements and our prices for each status, see the service pages; they are updated more often than overview articles.
How we help
We match the index to your situation rather than to the most-searched option: work, investor, family, remote work, retirement, second home and KITAP. If the status is for a business, read first about what a foreigner can open in Bali — since May 2026 some sectors on the island are closed to new companies.
Frequently asked questions
How many KITAS types are there?
After the May 2025 reclassification the total number of visa indices fell from 133 to 110. Several dozen of those are limited-stay permits, grouped by activity: work, investment, family, study, second home and others.
Is E32 the second home permit?
No, that is a common mistake. E32 is the repatriation group, for former Indonesian citizens and their descendants. Second home belongs to the E33 group.
Which KITAS leads to permanent status?
Work, religious activity, investment and second home — after three continuous years. Family and repatriation permits qualify immediately. E33G for remote workers does not lead to KITAP at all.
How many years can I live on a KITAS?
If the first permit was under five years, six years in total. If it was five years or more, ten years in total. A 180-day work KITAS extends in 180-day steps up to three years.
What age qualifies for the retirement KITAS?
The documents disagree here: the 2025 classification decree says 55, while regulation 22/2023 says 60 in its KITAP articles. If your age is near the line, confirm with immigration before applying.
